Source (2014)Concerto for Violin, Four Singers, and Chamber Ensemble
'Source' was premiered on March 5, 2014, at the USC Thornton School of Music by Thornton Edge, with Donald Crockett conducting and Clara Kim on violin.
Instrumentation:
'Source' grew out of my interest in sampling--a continuing fascination of mine. Up until recently, most of my own work with sampling has been within electronic outlets, including both electro-acoustic pieces using live processing as well as sequenced electronic music and 'electronica'. In writing 'Source', I began with the relatively loose concept of having the violin, the voices, and the ensemble sampling each other. The idea of sampling inspired other aspects of the piece, too, including the text, which comes from multiple source, yet is entirely composed of excerpts of text that themselves have already been sampled. In some cases, the texts are built of quotes of previous texts. In others, the texts have been previously set to music by other composers. And with some of the texts, the words are attributed to a tune or musical excerpt that has been sampled in another piece of music.
'Source' was written for and in collaboration with violinist Clara Kim. |
